Automatic Gates Safety Elements

An automatic gate without safety protection could be dangerous. The following equipment is available to ensure that you have a safe installation:

  • Force Control. The amount of force used by the motor can be finely controlled either by an adjustable setting on the gate control, which may be manually or automatically set when initial set-up takes place, or, in the case of hydraulic motors, by the adjustment of valves on the motors. This ensures that only sufficient force to move the gate is excerted by the motors. If  this force is exceeded the gate will stop.
  • Safety photo-cells. Photo-cells are used in nearly all automatic gates installations. Normally one set on the posts but often just back of the open position of the gate. Their operation is simple; an infra red beam is sent from one photo-cell (transmitter) and received on the other side of the driveway by the other photo-cell (receiver). If the infra red beam is broken by an obstacle in the driveway, stationery or moving, such as a car, the gate will not close. If photo-cells are fitted just beyond the sweep of the gate these can be set to stop the gate moving as they open. This will prevent the gates striking a vehicle which has stopped too close to the gate or any other objects in the way. See Photo-cells
  • Induction loops. As well as being used to open gates, induction loops can also be used to prevent the movement of the gates the same way as photo-cells. They may be used where there is nowhere to site photo-cells.
  • Safety Edges. Mainly used on sliding gates but also on swing gates, safety edges are mainly on the leading edge of the gate leaf and if they come in contact with any obstruction the gate immediately reverses. On sliding gates they may be on both leading and trailing edges to provide protection in opening and closing of the gate.
